Overview

The Qualcomm SURF8650 (with SURF standing for Subscriber Unit Reference Platform) is a reference platform from the early days of Snapdragon. Rather than being designed as a consumer phone, SURF hardware provided Qualcomm, handset manufacturers and engineers with a working platform for evaluating new chipset technology and developing devices around it. The SURF8650 was based on the QSD8650, one of the first chipsets introduced under the Snapdragon name in 2007.

The QSD8650 combined application processing, multimedia capabilities and 3G connectivity in a single platform, bringing considerably more computing power to mobile devices than earlier generations of Qualcomm hardware. The SURF8650 also incorporated several interesting experimental features, including early force-touch sensors and integrated gaming controls. These features illustrate how reference platforms could be used not only to demonstrate the core chipset, but also to explore new ways of interacting with mobile devices. Qualcomm demonstrated the platform with operating systems including Windows Mobile and Linux, reflecting its role as a flexible development base rather than a finished consumer product.

The SURF8650 represents an important transition in Qualcomm’s history. Earlier reference hardware was primarily focused on demonstrating and testing cellular modem technology, while platforms such as this increasingly brought the modem together with the processing power required for a complete smartphone. The same generation of Snapdragon technology would go on to power commercial smartphones, making the SURF8650 an early physical example of the reference hardware behind Qualcomm’s move into the modern smartphone era.
