Year: 2008
Prototype level: Cancelled
Codename: N/A

Overview

The Motorola ROKR Texel, codenamed Texel, was an unreleased music-focused smartphone developed by Motorola. It was based on Symbian UIQ 3.2 and combined a 2.8-inch display with a touch-sensitive, haptic keypad and Motorola’s distinctive “morphing” interface. Contemporary documentation identifies the software platform as Symbian UIQ 3.2, supporting its classification as a smartphone rather than a conventional feature phone.

Texel progressed to a highly developed prototype stage, with features including 3G/HSDPA, Wi-Fi, a 3-megapixel camera and 4 GB of storage. The project was ultimately cancelled before reaching commercial release, leaving the Texel as an interesting example of Motorola’s attempt to combine the ROKR music concept with a full smartphone platform.
