Overview

The HP Foxconn Erised 900 was an unreleased smartphone developed by HP and Foxconn around 2009. The surviving prototype is marked “Phase EVT 1.0”, indicating an Engineering Validation Test build, a stage where the industrial design and functional hardware are brought together using production-intent components and manufacturing processes. The phone is built around Qualcomm’s MSM7200A platform, with a Samsung display dated 5 March 2009 and a PCBA dated week 11 of 2009.

The history of the surviving examples is particularly unusual. According to the seller, hundreds of Erised 900 units were sent from HP’s development department to a waste-disposal facility for destruction. The seller recovered two phones, reportedly making these the only two examples known to have escaped disposal. The unit in this collection is non-functional, but its EVT markings and production-dated hardware provide a rare physical record of an otherwise undocumented HP development project.
